BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION – Cryptographic plant (without leaves or flowers) and perennial. Plant vivacious from 10 to 60 cm in height. It presents two types of stems, those that leave in early spring are the fertile stems, which differ from the rest in that they are yellow-brown, erect, and oval and ringed, reaching a height of approximately 20 to 50 cm. A cylindrical spike with numerous sporran arranged in a ring is found in these stems. When the spores mature, the sterile ones are born, which are fluted and hollow, with ramifications like a ponytail. It is fertile in the months of March to April.

ACTIVE PRINCIPLES – Abundant mineral salts; silica, potassium, magnesium. Poolsides, tannin’s, flavouring, traces of alkaloids, vitamin C.
PROPERTIES – Flavonoids and mineral salts justify their diuretic action. The abundance of silica salts gives it demineralising properties and contributes to the maintenance of collagen, increasing the elasticity of the tissues. It increases nonspecific defences of the organism. Because of the abundance of tannins it is astringent.
USES and APPLICATIONS – Indicated in asthenia, convalescence, anaemia, consolidation of fractures, rheumatism, and osteoporosis. When an increase in dieresis is required; cystitis, arthritis, gout, oedema and overweight accompanied by fluid retention. In topical use in dermal, buckle or corneal wounds and ulceration, elephantiasis, conjunctivitis, pharyngitis, dermatitis, erythematic, purifies and vulcanisation.
