Papaya, Carica papaya. Of this plant, whose fruits are widely known for their digestive properties, Nicaragua has at least 2 genera and 5 species, being the genera Carica and Jakarta. Carica cauliflora -Papaya de Monte, is distributed from Mexico to Colombia and Venezuela, also Trinidad, absent from the rest of the Antilles. Its fruits are eaten by birds. Papaya fruit benefits and side effects
Jacaratia dolichaula, -Barilillo / Papaya de Monte‖, is distributed from Mexico to Panama. Its fruits are edible mainly by birds and also by humans. Latex, especially the fruit, contains proteolysis enzymes, papain, and chymopapain, as well as a protease called Omega. The latex contains crude papain, which consists of a mixture of papain, chymopapain and omega papaya proteinase. Papain is a protein that contains 212 amino acids; the chain is retracted in two lobes in whose union the active site is located. The futon contains organic acids, especially butanoic, 1.2 mg per kg of arytenoids, glycoside derivatives of benzenoids, vitamins (C and E), and mineral salts such as potassium.
The seed contains a derivative of benzyl isothiocyanate, tropaeolin, an enzyme (myosin), and glycosides such as carrying and carps. The leaf contains small amounts of cacogenic glycosides, the alkaloids Caprice (1,500 ppm), Pilocarpine and Dehydrocarpaine 1 and 2. The bark contains a Penta-alcohol (Xylitol) and saponosides. Carpaine inhibits the development of tuberculosis and has anti-tumor activity, relaxes the uterine muscle and bronchi.
1: 10 swallowed seeds are used against intestinal worms
2: A slice of papaya 3 times a day, sweetened with jocose honey is used in case of ulcers in the stomach (ISNAYA 1998).
3: In Mexico, it is said that the infusion of the flowers is emenagogue, febrifuge and pectoral and that the firing of leaves is a good effect against asthma (Martinez 1936).
Carica Papaya is found in several communities in the buffer zone. Carica Cauliflora or papaya de Monte is located in the lower part of the protected area.
