Diffused from India all over the world. It is an herbaceous plant, rustic, permanent, in the territory of Peas Blanca’s, with a rectangular erect stem, with many branches and exhaling a mild menthol smell. Its leaves are long etiolated, oval, slightly toothed or whole. Its flowers are white or pink, tubular. It is mealier. The lower the territory of Peas Blanca’s is cultivated, it has more essential oils. With some shadow it becomes more aromatic. The basil that we have in the lower part of the protected area, especially in the farm La Station, Don Francisco Cruz and in the CEN, is much more mentholated than the one that is grown in warm and drier areas.

It’s essential oil is composed of eucalyptol, straggle, cineol, Borneo, cymene, germinal, knothole, cardinal, β-carofileno, cx-terpin, saprobe, linalool, cheviot, methylchavicol, leno, cafe no, citronellal, β-pentene, methyl inanimate, Miocene, limonene and other terrene derivatives. The leaves also contain aesculetina or coumarone, benzenoids, paracumarinic acid, (phenylpropanide) and flavonoids eradicator, its derivatives, and vice nine.

It has anti-depressive effects, anti-emetic (relieves the desire to vomit), and centrifuge (relieves fever). It is also stimulating the adrenal cortex and expectorant. The essential oil acts against Gram positive and negative bacteria. The aqueous solution also acts against fungi on the skin. The infusion has smooth muscle relaxant effects and anti androgenic effects in the stomach by the presence of flavouring triglycerides. Leaves and flowers are analgesic.

Basil is found in many of the territory’s communities, as part of the home gardens. It is not found as a crop. Most families do not use it to they do not use it to keep insects away from homes, to protect their clothes, or to protect other crops, despite their repellent qualities.

The cultivation of basil as a productive sector can lead to have about 20,000 plants per hectare or about 18,000 per manzana. They are usually sown very close together. In the CEN, on a small scale, we have tried with good results to have the plants about 40 cm between plant and plant and 1m between groove and groove, a distance that allows to pass between and to prune branches to harvest leaves and collect seeds.

What is harvested is the leaf, preferably in the morning, which is when there is greater concentration of essential oils. The branches are pruned and then hang protected from the sun and moisture, and preferably where the wind runs, so that they can dry without fungus or meld that deteriorates the fabric. The dried leaves are packed in paper or plastic bags of 100, 250, 500 and 1 kg.

  1. That screen to cover up water heater is a great idea! I’ve been trying to come up with a solution to cover up ours that would make our laundry room a little bit more than just a utility room, and that would definately help. Thanks for the idea!
