Are Vitamin and Mineral Supplements Necessary in the Diet? What are essential, and how many should we take? The answer to this question is quite simple; we have been told in the Word of God that the original diet was fruits, vegetables, nuts, and grains (Genesis 1:29); and after sin it was permitted to consume the herbs of the field (Genesis 3:18). Nowhere in the word of God are we told about taking supplements. If the good God had wanted us to take Vitamin C, He would have created a tree that would produce Vitamin C pills. However, He created many different fruit trees, and fruits contain the vitamin C our body needs. The American population has been convinced that vitamins are good for health and more than 40% take vitamin supplements every day.
Vitamin and mineral supplements for bodybuilding
Our need for vitamins and minerals has been greatly exaggerated. The amount of vitamins the body needs for a year is very small. Every vitamin and every mineral necessary for our body can be found in the foods we eat. There is a long list of experts in the field of nutrition who are expressing great concerns about the health threat that arises from the consumption of vitamins and mineral supplements.
Dr. Myron Winch, director of the Institute of Human Nutrition at Columbia University, notes that some vitamins, long considered non-harmful, are producing medical problems including fatal liver damage. (Los Angeles Times 12/30/83). Recent reports about the excessive use of vitamin B-6 warn that this can cause damage to the nervous system. Symptoms of this disorder include unsafe walking, numbness or tingling in the hands and feet. Microscopic analyses show impaired nerve fibber proportional to the amount of vitamin B- & consumed. These and other neurological problems may require months to recover or may become permanent. According to an article in the Health Reporter by Robert MC. Carter, Ph. D., man-made vitamin supplements are simply not desirable for the human body. In the process of extraction and fractional of the elements, they become useless. Once removed and isolated, vitamins lose their value. Technologically there is the possibility of creating a grain of wheat in the laboratory. Every chemical you need can be duplicated and inserted into a grain of wheat, but if it is put on the ground, it will not grow. Why? Because it is natural.
Man can not improve the natural sources of vitamins and minerals that God gave us. For example: there are many warnings against the use of vitamin C. Here are some of its side effects. Vitamin C has an effect that counteracts the effect of vitamin D. This means that when you take extra vitamin C, your body needs extra amounts of vitamin D. Another side effect is that vitamin C can decrease the use of vitamins complex B in particular vitamin B-6 and vitamin B-12.
An orange has 70 milligrams of vitamin C; it also contains 0.11 milligrams of thiamine, 0.05 of Riboflavin, and so on. The orange contains minerals, 52 milligrams of calcium, 18 milligrams of phosphorus, etc. When you take a vitamin C supplement, you are only taking vitamin C and NOT the other vitamins and minerals in the proportion that God wants them for you in one package.
We know that the vitamin C – vitamin D ratio is important; that the potassium-magnesium ratio is important, and that the calcium-magnesium ratio is important.
But what about those elements that we do not know? Since our knowledge regarding adequate proportions is limited, it is possible that we cause imbalance in our body by indiscriminate consumption of vitamin and mineral supplements. I recommend that we eat natural foods, which have all the vitamins and minerals we need, as well as others that have not yet been discovered; and do not waste our money or health supplements.
NATURAL VITAMINS VRS. SYNTHETICS
Paul Stilt, a biochemist and food scientist at some of the largest corporations in the United States, reports that government law requires that only 3% of a food supplement be of natural origin before it can be labelled “Natural “. He points out that since synthetic vitamins are so much cheaper; it is likely that many of the “natural” vitamins on the market are 0.07% synthetic.
He says it takes 30 oranges to produce a 1.00 milligram tablet of vitamin C, and a bottle of all-natural vitamin C tablets could cost four hundred dollars. MEGAVITAMINS AND LEARNING DISORDERS
A group of 20 children with learning difficulties were receiving large doses of ascorbic acid, niacin amide, calcium pantothenate and pyridoxine together with a low carbohydrate and high protein diet. After a period of six months, the boys received the megavitamins and showed no significant improvement compared to another group on a single diet.
THERAPY WITH MEGAVITAMINES / VISUAL LOSS
Three adult men, who received massive doses of nicotinic acid for the treatment of high cholesterol, suffered from loss of vision due to brain damage.
Nicotine acid can induce fluid retention with inflammation of the eye leading to decreased vision. After administration of Nicotine acid was discontinued, there was some improvement in vision.
CALCIUM / STRONG BONES
Large doses of calcium can decrease bone strength rather than strength.
Large calcium supplements alter the normal proportion and can cause weakening of the bones.
High levels of calcium interfere with the function of vitamin K and may lead to internal bleeding.
Dr. Walter Mertz of the Centre for Human Nutrition Research, Department of Agriculture in Beltsville, Maryland, USA, noted that iron and zinc absorption is blocked by calcium supplements.
CALCIUM / ARTHRITIS SUPPLEMENTS
Calcium supplements may induce symptoms of arthritis in sensitive patients. A 67-year-old woman developed inflammation and redness on her right thumb after she started taking calcium supplements.
The symptoms disappeared approximately two weeks after the supplement was discontinued. Later she began to consume OS-CAL as a calcium supplement and in two weeks the symptoms reappeared, and again disappeared only after the Calcium consumption had ceased. Many people are very sensitive to calcium supplements.
VITAMIN A / RISK OF CANCER
Because some special studies have suggested that vitamin A is protected against cancer, some people are recommending supplements of this vitamin. Suzanne T. Orr. Ph. Dr. of the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine at the University of Maryland in Baltimore notes that vitamin A can be easily obtained from dietary sources of pro vitamin a found in many vegetables and fruits. A PORTION of carrots, cabbage, sweet potatoes, kale, mango, or many other natural foods is sufficient to provide the Recommended Dose (Clinical Nutrition 4: 138142, 1985).
VITAMIN WITH COMMON COLD
Vitamin C has not been proven to change the course of a common cold. Over-the-counter medications are of doubtful value. If one ingredient is beneficial the other components may be in unbalanced proportions to achieve positive results.
VITAMIN C / IRON DEFICIENCY ANEMIA
Consumption of large doses (1500 mg daily) of vitamin C to prevent colds can cause iron deficiency anaemia, apparently by blocking the effects of copper, which is essential for transporting iron into the blood. A group of volunteer men given vitamin C supplements develop iron-deficiency anaemia in spite of proper iron consumption.
There is a long list of experts in the field of nutrition who are asking serious questions about the threats to health from the consumption of vitamin supplements. Dr. Win nick, Director of the Institute of Human Nutrition at Columbia University, says that some vitamins, long thought to be non-harmful, are now producing health problems, including nerve damage, mild intestinal pain, and fatal damage of the liver.

She thought she needed these supplements and did not understand why she was so nervous, weak, suffering from duodenal ulcer and gall bladder problems. I want to emphasize once again, given the delicacy of the subject in which the consumption of vitamin supplements and minerals is harmful and not beneficial as is commonly believed. Great authorities in the matter of nutrition corroborate it with a great number of studies and exhort like me, to the consumption of the vitamins and minerals of the natural sources and in the right amounts that the organism needs. What are these sources? A great variety of fresh foods (Cooking partially destroys vitamins), if we do, we will not have vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
